The Queensland coast offers many locations to dive the Great Barrier Reef but Cairns is by far the most popular.
Cairns scuba diving industry is advanced and all trips are fully accredited offering full equipment options as the norm. Boats are large premium vessels with state of the art technology and excellent amenities including compressors on every single one.
With stunning outer reefs in close proximity to the continental shelf only a 90 minute boat ride away means less travel time and more dive time and all day trips offer upto three dives per trip.

Being an adventure hub with so many nature based activities on offer, as-well as it's balmy tropical climate to eat, drink and relax, a cairns scuba diving holiday has the potential to be an even bigger holiday of a lifetime than one could have expected!
Short of time? Or money?
A Cairns scuba diving day trip offers the chance to fully experience the Great Barrier Reef with upto three certified dives.
Day trips depart around 8am and return at 4:30pm. This means 4-5 hours of time to explore the outer reefs. In this time there is chance for one, two or three dives, the choice is yours. If your not diving you can either snorkel or just relax on premium vessels soaking up the sun.
Equipment is available on all trips which includes a dive computer. If you need tanks and weights only then a discount rate may be available.
All trips offer light breakfast, quality buffet lunch and afternoon snacks.

There are several Cairns scuba diving Liveaboard options available that visit the outer reefs immediately east and north-east of Cairns.

Ocean Quest is a large luxury vessel that never returns to Cairns acting as a floating diving hotel.
It frequents Norman, Saxon and Hastings outer reefs to the north-east of Cairns and each day a fast rendezvous vessel drops-off and picks-up passengers.
With this kind of arrangement the number of nights on the liveaboard can be to your liking.... from one to ten!
Ocean Quest offers more comfortable and spacious surroundings including a dining area and games room. There is also large deck space and furniture to soak up the sun between dives. Cabins are double or twin with en-suite bathroom. All food is chef-prepared.
Transfer Info: On day one of your liveaboard you will arrive at Ocean Quest is after lunch meaning dives 1 and 2 are off the transfer boat.

The final Cairns scuba diving liveaboard option is Reef Encounter.
Reef Encounter is similar to Reef Quest, it also acts as a floating divers hotel covering the same reefs but different dive sites as to their marine park permits.
Reef Encounter offers deluxe accommodation options including transfers by helicopter for the ultimate Great Barrier Reef experience.
There are excellent twin and double en-suite cabins all with ocean views and even several cabins offered as multi-share meaning liveabaords become affordable for this travelling on a budget.
Reef Encounter has a name for offering up the best meals on the reef! Experienced chefs create culinary delights onboard and every guest talks about how good the food is!
Transfer Info: On day one of your liveaboard the transfer is direct arriving at 9:30-10:00am. On your return day the transfer boat will depart approx. 3pm. This means maximum time is spent on the actual liveabaord.

There are two companies that offer the ultimate diving experiences available in Australia.
Mike Ball Dive Expeditions and Spirit of Freedom run weekly 7 day expeditions along the famous Ribbon Reefs and out into the Coral Sea itself visiting Osprey Reef known for its high density shark populations.
The Ribbon Reefs are located on the continual shelf and begin adjacent to Cooktown (150km north of Cairns) and continue north for 100km finishing up near Lizard Island.
The 7 day expeditions can also be split in two and flights to and from Lizard Island are available to join the trips for either 3 or 4 nights.
Both companies are highly respected in the scuba diving world with Mike Ball himself still very much involved in the day to day running of his operation that attracts technical divers from across the world.
Gear hire is available on both vessels including technical equipment and nitrox.
