Wonders of the Daintree National Park by day and night

Journey into the heart of Far North Queensland’s Daintree rainforest, where ancient trees whisper secrets, exotic wildlife abounds, and nightfall unveils hidden wonders.
Welcome to the Daintree
In the heart of Far North Queensland lies a realm of natural wonder, where the emerald rainforest meets the azure sea, and time seems to stand still. It’s a place where ancient trees whisper tales of the past, and hidden creatures roam beneath the canopy, unseen by the casual observer.
Our journey begins in the tropical city of Cairns, where the promise of adventure beckons from the horizon. We set out on the scenic Great Barrier Reef Drive, winding our way along the coastal highway as the landscape transforms before our eyes. Lush rainforest gives way to panoramic vistas of the Coral Sea, and the salty breeze carries the scent of adventure.

Daintree River Widlife
Our first stop is the Daintree River, where we embark on a wildlife cruise aboard the Solar Whisper. The gentle hum of the electric motor blends seamlessly with the sounds of the forest as we glide along the water’s surface, our eyes scanning the banks for signs of life.

Crocodiles bask in the sun, their prehistoric forms a testament to the timeless beauty of this pristine ecosystem along with more iconic species such as the Boyd’s Forest Dragon, Ulysses butterfly, Spectacled flying-fox, White-lipped tree frog, Azure, Little & Sacred Kingfishers and Wompoo fruit dove.

Ancients Forests
As we venture deeper into the heart of the Daintree, the world around us comes alive with the symphony of nature. Towering trees sway gently in the breeze, their leaves rustling with the chorus of birdsong. Along the way, our knowledgeable guides share stories of the land and its indigenous inhabitants, offering glimpses into the rich cultural tapestry that defines this ancient landscape.

My favourite place is North Queensland. It has an amazing rainforest which is quite unlike any other rainforest in the world"
Sir David Attenborough
Cape Tribulation
At Cape Tribulation Beach, we pause to take in the breathtaking beauty of the coastline, where the verdant rainforest meets the turquoise waters of the Coral Sea. Here, the rhythm of the waves lulls us into a state of tranquility, a reminder of the interconnectedness of all living things.

A wonderful example of the interconnectedness within this forest is the Southern Cassowary. Many species rely on cassowaries for seed dispersal and germination. For this reason they’re known as a ‘keystone’ species.

Nocturnal Wonders of the Daintree
As night falls, we embark on a nocturnal adventure unlike any other. Armed with torches and keen eyes, we venture into the depths of the forest, where the shadows come alive with the sounds of unseen creatures. With each step, the forest reveals its secrets, from the haunting call of nocturnal birds to the rustle of unseen mammals in the underbrush.

What mammals may show their face? Look out for the endemic Daintree River Ringtail Possum, Northern Long-nosed Bandicoot and Northern Bettong. A spectacular and elusive local, the Bennetts Tree Kangaroo, is always a special spotting moment.

The need to preserve
As we bid farewell to the Daintree and make our way back to civilisation, we carry with us memories of a day spent in harmony with nature. It’s an experience that transcends time and space, a reminder of the beauty and resilience of the natural world, and the importance of preserving it for generations to come.
